It will be observed that the top 'platform' of the George stand exactly replicates
the aluminium plate screwed to the 63's base. It is desirable to leave
this aluminium plate in
situ, as removing it can cause the speaker's spark detector to be activated
by the surge created when household mains switches are operated (thus temporarily
shutting down
the speaker). The easiest way to fit the stand is with the speaker tumed
upside down.
- First, remove the speaker's wooden top (if you don't do this, it is
likely to fall off when you're trying to manoeuvre the speaker in its upside-down
position). The top 'clips' off: looking at the speaker from the front, firmly
slide the top to the right of the speaker. If it refuses to budge, tap the
left-hand side of the wooden top gently with a rubber hammer or similar (use
a piece of card if you're worried about damaging the wood). The top should
now slide off.
- Turn the speaker upside-down, leaning it securely against a support
(such as a
desk or a soft chair).
- If the speaker is fitted with Quad's feet, prise off the end caps to
reveal the screw
heads. Remove these screws, plus all the other screws securing the aluminium
base plate. (warning: if you decide to remove the plate and look at the
electronics, DO NOT touch anything unless the speaker has been unplugged
from the mains for at least 3 hours).
- If you have removed the plate, now carefully re-position it so that
it lines up with its self-tap screw fixture clips (if you're unsure, try
inserting a couple of screws to make sure the aluminium plate is seated
properly).
- Decide which side of the stand you want as a 'front aspect', tum the
stand upside-down and place what is now its top platform onto the speaker
base, aligning the stand holes with those in the aluminium plate. If the
plate tries to move, lift off the stand and re-position the plate. (This
can be a bit fiddly -but be patient!)
- Now insert the LONGER screws provided in place of the short screws which
originally held on the base plate. Once one screw is inserted, the others
should align automatically. With the George stand thus secured, insert
the spikes provided, and restore the speaker to its upright position.
Note: the spikes are adjustable, but if a degree of 'tilt' is required,
it will be found easier to do this simply by inclining the speaker backwards
or forwards and making appropriate adjustment to the front or rear spikes.
